NiLu, a Harlem-based, Black-owned Lifestyle Gift Shop, Supporting Black Creators, Up and Running for Fall 2020

September 18 00:06 2020

New York, NY, USA – September 17, 2020 – NiLu, a Black-owned retail store (and growing e-commerce website) located in Harlem is finding ways to support and uplift the African American community in New York City and across the United States.

NiLu’s co-owners Mark Pinn and Katrina Parris, have lived and worked in Harlem for the past 20 years. Recognizing the need for a retail store above 96th street where people could shop for elegant, eclectic, beautiful gifts that reflect the people and culture of the Harlem community, they opened NiLu in 2015. NiLu’s product assortment is an eclectic array of home décor, art, jewelry and gifts made by Black and multi-cultural creators.

Named after their two sons Nigel and Luke, NiLu functions not only as a retail store but also as a community center for local artists and designers. NiLu also operates as a maker’s showcase hosting art shows, book signings (Dapper Dan hosted his book launch for “Dapper Dan: Made in Harlem: A Memoir” there in 2019) and local events. Every Saturday NiLu offers a space/platform for local multicultural designers and makers in the store to present their work to the community.

With Covid-19 affecting small businesses, makers, and the strength of the Black Lives Matter Movement, NiLu has continued to support the local Harlem community, as well as Black and multicultural creators and makers across the country. Seeing the need for more visibility for multicultural creators across the country, NiLu is expanding their brand and developing their e-commerce website so people can support small businesses, Black makers, and multicultural creators from across the U.S.
