Final Contest | 2022 DIA Final Evaluation Come to a Successful Conclusion

On November 3, 2022, the 7th Design Intelligence Award (“DIA”) Final Evaluation were successfully held in Mengqi Town, Liangzhu, Zhejiang Province.

Han Xu, Vice President of China Academy of Art; Chen Haijiang, Level-I Researcher of Economic and Information Technology Department of Zhejiang and Deputy Secretary of the Industry Party Committee, and Wang Yun, Secretary General of DIA Committee, attended the event and delivered speeches. The Final Evaluation will be carried out online and offline, and DIA judges at home and abroad will participate in simultaneously through online video conference.

Han Xu, vice president of China Academy of Art, said that under the leadership of Zhejiang Provincial Government, the DIA insists on the integration of intelligent manufacturing into the tide of digital economy; It closely links design with industry, updates creative services into innovative industries, integrates industrial design with digital economy and intelligent manufacturing and realizes the interaction between them, making more and more design works visible in the market and society. In this way, it has driven industrial transformation, successfully promoted intelligent transformation of manufacturing industry, and truly exerted the essence of “intelligence”.

Chen Haijiang, a Level-I researcher at the Economic and Information Technology Department of Zhejiang, pointed out in his speech that DIA has become the most internationalized industrial design award in China after seven years of steady development; The Zhejiang Provincial Party Committee and Provincial Government attach great importance to the development of industrial design; they are not only providing comprehensive support to the DIA, but also are vigorously building various industrial design platforms, gather high-end design resources and improve the industrial service system. We also sincerely invite all the evaluation experts to visit  industrial design demonstration bases and manufacturing enterprise centers across Zhejiang Province, deepen cooperation and exchanges with them, promote the transformation of more and more industrial design products into productivity, and boost high-quality economic development with the power of design.

The number and quality of entries in this year reached a new high. We have received a total of 8010 entries from 44 countries and regions around the world. After preliminary evaluation in China main division and 12 overseas divisions, a total of 840 entries were successfully shortlisted and they will compete fiercely for the DIA awards.

13 Chinese and foreign judges will follow the “DIA Evaluation System”, and rigorously select all the winners of this year through comprehensive voting after going through two links: physical evaluation and meeting discussions.

Wang Yun (China)

Director of the Design Innovation Center and Dean of School of Design, China Academy of Art

Professor, Doctoral Supervisor, President of Institute of Industrial Design, China Academy of Art; Vice president of China Industrial Design Association; Vice Chairman of Industrial Design Teaching Committee of China Education Association of Machinery Industry; Member of Industrial Design Art Committee of Chinese Artists Association and Vice President of Zhejiang Industrial Design Association. He has participated in several major events in Chinese design circles, including Shanghai World Expo, Bauhaus in China, National Project of Cultural Development through Technological Innovation, “2011 Plan” Collaborative Innovation Center, etc.

Sertac Ersayin (Turkey)

Chairman of the Society of Turkish Industrial Designers

Member of the Board of Directors of Design Turkey and Chairman of the Society of Turkish Industrial Designers; He has served as judge of many international competitions such as IF Design Award, Design Intelligence Award, Shenzhen Global Design Award, G-mark Design Award and Design Management Europe Award, and has served as design director in many Fortune 500 companies in Istanbul, Hong Kong and Shenzhen.

Shouqian Sun  (China)

Director of Future Design Lab, Zhejiang University

Professor and Doctoral Supervisor of Zhejiang University Senior Visiting Scholar, Delft University of Technology, Netherlands. He is now the director of the Design Discipline Degree Committee, Zhejiang University, member of the Design Discipline Evaluation Group of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, member of the Teaching Steering Committee of Design Discipline in Colleges and Universities of the Ministry of Education, Vice Chairman and Secretary General of China Innovation Design Industry Strategic Alliance, Vice Chairman of Industrial Design Branch of Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society, Director of Zhejiang Key Laboratory of Design Intelligence and Digital Creativity Research, Vice Chairman of Dragon Design Foundation. He also serves as the editorial board member of the Journal of Computer-Aided Design and Computer Graphics and Design Engineering. His main research fields involve innovative design theory and method, intelligent wearable robot, digital art and design, etc.

Chaode Li (China)

Curator of Soochow University Museum

Former dean of School of Art, Soochow University. Now he is a second-level professor and doctoral supervisor of Soochow University; Curator of Soochow University Museum; Leader of doctoral program in design (first-level discipline), and Chief Expert of major national social science (art) projects. He has published seven theoretical works, including academic monographs “Design Aesthetics”, “Garment Review”, “The Cultural Position of Design” and “Experience Vision”. He has published more than 60 papers in core journals such as Decoration, Art Observation and Art Research and other important academic journals. He also has written more than 70 art and design reviews. Mr. Li has served as the final judge of the design exhibition area of the 11th, 12th and 13th National Fine Arts Exhibition. His art work “The Sadness of Maguan” was included in “The Works of the 13th National Art Exhibition Displayed in Beijing”.

Nicolas Cinguino (France)

Co-founder of BLANK Group

Nicolas Cinguino graduated from the Mathematical Physics and Engineering, Ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts de Lyon in 2020, and obtained a master’s degree in industrial and product design from the École supérieure d’art et de design de Valenciennes in 2005. After graduation, he worked at s.point Design Institute for 3 years, and then tried to design independently for a period of time. In 2008, he co-founded BLANK Group with several professionals with complementary competences, which aims at providing top-level strategic planning and creative construction planning for international enterprises. At present, their customers include multinational enterprise groups such as 3M, Philips, Fissler, Frank, Supor, Midea and BOE.

Linghao Zhang (China)

Linghao Zhang (China), President of Nanjing University of the Arts

Deputy Party Secretary, President, Professor and Doctoral Supervisor of Nanjing University of the Arts. Visiting Scholar, Polytechnic University of Milan, Italy. He was selected into the National Talent Program (Youth) of the Ministry of Education, the Outstanding Talents in the New Century of the Ministry of Education, the High-level Talents of the “Six Talent Peaks” in Jiangsu Province, and the Training Targets of Young and Middle-aged Science and Technology Leaders in the “333 Project” in Jiangsu Province. He won the title of the first “Top 10 Educators in Industrial Design in China”. Mr. Zhang also takes charge of the Key Laboratory of Industrial Design of China Light Industry and the “Experience Design and System Innovation” by the Excellent Innovation Team of Philosophy and Social Sciences in Jiangsu Universities.

Fugee TSUNG (China)

Acting Dean in Information Hub and Chair Professor, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou)

He used to be the head of the Department of Industrial Engineering and Policy Analysis, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and the director of the Quality and Big Data Analysis Laboratory. At present, he is an academician of International Academy for Quality (IAQ), a fellow of American Statistical Association (ASA), a fellow of the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers (IISE), a fellow of American Society for Quality (ASQ), an elected member of the International Statistical Institute (ISI) and a fellow of Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE). In addition, Professor TSUNG is also the former chief editor of the Journal of Quality Technology (JQT), the flagship journal of ASQ, and the associate editor of IISE Transactions and Technometrics of the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers. Mr. TSUNG has conducted extensive and in-depth research in the field of industrial big data and quality control, and actively participates in the education and research on quality improvement and management.

Chao Zhao (China) Associate Dean of Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University

Professor Zhao, doctoral supervisor, is associate dean of Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University, vice president of Tsinghua (Qingdao) Academy of Arts and Science Innovation Research, director of Tsinghua Institute of Health and Medical Industry Design, secretary general of Design Teaching Steering Committee of Ministry of Education, vice chairman of ico-D. He focuses on interdisciplinary and cross-cultural design research and innovation practice, and advocates integrating culture, technology, aesthetics, commerce and other elements through design innovation to realize the social attribute, humanized experience and sustainable development of design. In recent years, Dr. Zhao Chao is mainly engaged in design research and practice in the fields of user experience research, human-oriented design innovation method research, health care product and service design innovation, aging design research, social innovation theory research, etc.

Jian Zhao (China)

Distinguished Professor and Doctoral Supervisor of Shanghai University; Doctoral Supervisor of Macao University of Science and Technology

One of the pioneers of contemporary Chinese design art. He is the Former Vice President of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts; Director of Design Committee of Guangdong Artists Association, Chairman of Academic Committee of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts; Currently he is a doctoral supervisor of Shanghai University, a doctoral supervisor of Macao University of Science and Technology, Vice President of China National Interior Decoration Association, Deputy Director of Graphic Design Committee of Chinese Artists Association, and Deputy Director of Design Committee of China Association of Higher Education. Mr. Zhao serves as honorary professor or visiting professor in more than 40 universities.

Chunfang Guo (China) Dean of Art College, Jilin University

Mr. Guo is one of the Leading Talents in Philosophy and Social Sciences of the 3rd batch of national “Ten Thousand Talents Program”, and one of the Famous Cultural Artists of the Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China and “Four Batches” Talents. He is also a member of the Design Education Steering Committee of Ministry of Education, a member of First National College Aesthetic Education Steering Committee of Ministry of Education, Deputy Director of Cultural Tourism & Art Industry Committee of National College Employment and Entrepreneurship Steering Committee, and expert of Art Design Sub-Committee of National Art Degree Postgraduate Education Steering Committee. Mr. Guo has long been engaged in innovative talent training and design education, and he is the head of the design team of the mascot “Shuey Rhon” of Beijing 2022 Winter Paralympics; Head of National First-class Program (Visual Communication Design); Head of National First-class Course (Visual Image Design).

Kostas Terzidis (US)

Dean, College of Design and Innovation, Tongji University

Kostas Terzidis is a professor in D&I at Tongji University and Director of Shangxiang Laboratory. He served as an associate professor of GSD at Harvard University (2003-2011) and an assistant professor at UCLA (1995-2003). Kostas Terzidis holds a doctorate from the University of Michigan, a master’s degree from Oregon State University and a diploma from Aristotle University. He is the author of many academic papers and the only author of the following four books: Permutation Design (Routeledge: 2014), Algorithms for Visual Design Using the Processing Language (Wiley: 2009), Algorithmic Architecture (Architectural Press: 2006) and Expressive Form (Spon: 2003). His research now focuses on artificial intelligence and art: Kostas Terzidis has developed courses for children and artificial intelligence, conferences on artificial intelligence + art, and papers on artificial intelligence and design.

James Hope (US)

Vice President of Global Design, Baoneng Motor

James Hope graduated in automobile design from College for Creative Studies (CCS) in 1992. He is now the vice president of global design of Baoneng Motor, and used to be the chief designer of Mustang. He worked for Ford, Daimler Chrysler and General Motors in the United States, and served as the global executive design director of Chery Automobile for many years. With an international vision and successful experience of localization in China, James Hope has created a large number of famous mass-produced cars and concept cars during his 30 years in the automobile design industry.

The finalists of 2022 DIA will be released later, and then activities such as 2022 DIA Excellent Works Show will start. Let’s wait and see!
